Have you ever driven a familiar route, say from home to work or school, and arrived at your destination without consciously paying attention to anything along the way? It’s as if you just magically arrived.
Question: who was driving the car? That’s how powerful your subconscious brain is. It can literally drive your car for you AND have you (and everyone you passed on the road) arrive safely.
I remember watching a hilarious scene years ago where a friend of mine was sleeping. One of our other friends thought it would be funny to startle him awake, so she began shaking him. WHILE HE WAS STILL ASLEEP, he put her in a headlock and held her there in a death grip for about 30 seconds before he woke up. He had a black belt in karate. Whatever is repeated often over time becomes automatic, getting stored in subconscious programming and operating independent of conscious awareness.
Look at anyone that has excelled at something—athletes, musicians, performers, soldiers, etc.—they all use this programming to their advantage. They make it look effortless, right? It looks effortless because masters are no longer “thinking.” They are simply in the flow of doing as an expression of who they are. Becoming truly exceptional requires utilizing the power of the subconscious mind to automatically navigate the details of a craft when in the moment of performance. Getting to automatic doesn’t happen accidentally. First actions are very consciously chosen and then practiced and practiced and practiced and…practiced. Through repetition, the behavior gets reinforced to the point where the subconscious takes over and a new default program is born!
You leverage your subconscious, too, every time you master a skill that you use on a regular basis…learning to drive a car, learning to dance, learning a language or to play football. Go back even further; there was a time you couldn’t feed yourself, put on your own clothes or even walk, and now you can. You already have thousands of automatic programs in your thoughts, behaviors, emotions, relationships, health choices, finances, language. These are the habits you have formed over the years, consciously or unconsciously. Some of these are generating what you really want for yourself. But what about the ones that aren’t? The truth is, these outdated programs will continue to get in your way as long as they remain, because the subconscious brain will work to carry them out 24/7 whether you want it to or not. But you don’t have to continue to be ruled by old programs. You can master your subconscious! What got programmed can get reprogrammed.
This mechanism for automatic thoughts and behaviors is absolutely perfect. Even if what is on automatic for you right now is no longer what you desire for your life, the PROCESS is perfect. The only thing that needs to change to get the results you want is the PROGRAM your subconscious is running. Once reprogrammed, you’ll have all the incredible power that was once working effectively against you now working effectively for you.
One tried and true method for reprogramming is repetition. It absolutely works. Practiced consistently over time, you will create new automatic habits through repetition. Depending on the strength of the old programs, some new programs will take longer than others to get established. In addition to repetition, you can speed up your results by utilizing methods that replicate the state your brain was in when you learned so many of the old programs in the first place.
You’ve heard that the first seven years of life are the formative years? There is a reason for that. Up until age seven, the human brain is mostly in Theta Wave. Theta wave is essentially “record” mode. During this time, children record without filters. It doesn’t matter if they like what they’re recording or not, it’s simply getting programmed into the brain that “this is who I am and how life is for me, them, etc.” It is the brain wave that, as adults, you are in just after falling asleep and just before waking up. Techniques that elevate Theta waves allow you to reprogram your subconscious much faster than repetition alone. Emotional Freedom Technique, meditation, mindfulness and hypnosis all have been shown to be highly effective for clearing out old programs and replacing them with consciously chosen ones instead.
Start with just one. What one belief, thought, emotion or action, if it was operating automatically for you, would make the biggest difference in your life right now? Really get present to how your life would be if that one thing was running 24/7 for you. Start it today. Be in intentional action with it and you will create the space for a new conscious choice to become an automatic subconscious program. I can help you do that. This is how you transform by the renewing of your mind.
